After researching the ketogenic (keto) diet for several years, I resolved to start eating the keto way on November 1, 2019. I told my husband, James, and he agreed to join me. We both knew we needed to do something—and keto got us moving in the right direction.

What was slowing us down

James and I had endured a lot of pain that had slowed us down over the years.

I have suffered from migraine headaches most of my life. Two years ago, I developed a constant migraine as well as hemiplegic migraines that forced me to file for disability. The hemiplegic migraines cause memory issues and stroke-like symptoms including loss of muscle function and slow speech. When a hemiplegic migraine starts, I must lay down anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes.

The medicines I take for migraines had caused me to gain weight. So, I had battled with my weight all my life too. I did not want to become a statistic.

James had also spent a lot of time out of commission. In 2000, he fell 60 feet out of a tree and broke his back. He had rotator cuff surgery in 2013 and 2019. For a while, my former body builder husband could not even lift weights.

By the time we started keto, James weighed over 300 pounds. He was lethargic. He also had high blood pressure, and the number kept rising.

We both needed to lose weight and get in shape for the sake of our health, our family, and our future.

Getting moving again

Making the decision to change the way we ate helped us get moving again.

The first shift in my diet came in 2010 when I found out I was allergic to milk, wheat, and whey. I stopped consuming those foods. I also started juicing, which lowered my blood pressure and cholesterol so much that I no longer needed medicine to regulate my levels.

James and I slowly transitioned to the keto diet. If we ordered a hamburger with fries, we would take off the top bun and eat only five fries each. Then we took off both hamburger buns and ordered a side salad instead of fries. We limited the croutons on our salad to three and eventually worked our way down to no croutons and a hamburger patty wrapped in lettuce.

My love of cooking has helped with the shift to keto. I make keto-friendly versions of foods, so we do not feel like we are missing out. For example, we eat hearts of palm in place of fried potatoes. I make homemade ketchup that does not knock us out of ketosis.

I have no desire to go back to the way I used to eat. Keto is my end-all way of eating. Actually, keto is more than a diet for us—it is now a lifestyle.

What helps us keep moving

Several things have helped us keep moving along the way.

The ketones help me to keep making progress when I reach a weight-loss plateau. James maintains ketosis primarily through his diet, but he also uses MCM Nutrition products on occasion.

The benefits we have experienced from the keto lifestyle also keep us going. In less than 10 months, I have lost 50 pounds and James has lost 55 pounds. Our sleep has improved. We both have more energy and can do more things.

James is working out again in our home gym. He can now lift some weights. He is experiencing less pain in his back, knees, and other joints.

Keto has helped me in other ways too. The diet counteracts the weight gain that would typically come with the medicines I have to take for migraines. It has also reduced the hot flashes I started having after undergoing a hysterectomy.

Our motivation today

Our faith, family, and purpose in life motivate us each day.

My faith influences my outlook. My mother always told me, “Put God first and all will fall into place.” I live by her words, which I have found to be true.

Life consists of choices. We have a choice to make when we face hard things like chronic illnesses and injuries. I pray a lot and choose to move forward.

I believe life is what you make it. I choose to make my life a positive platform. I aim to always look at the most positive side of things.

James said I am his motivation. We have a beautiful family together. We have four grown sons. James and I want to continue to enjoy our relationships with our children and with each other.

Of course, we still want to lose more weight. But we both have other things we want to accomplish as well. We need to be healthy to do all these things.

James is a superintendent for a private golf course. He manages the grounds of the golf course. Being able to move quickly, without pain, helps him do his job effectively.

I still want to be productive and return to work someday. I desire to be an advocate for others. I hope to use what I have been through to uplift people.

Our encouragement to others

Our encouragement to others echoes the message of MCM Nutrition: Keep moving.

We advise people who choose the keto journey to start slowly and keep moving forward. I agree with the English poet Robert Lloyd who said, “Slow and steady wins the race.” The rewards will be well worth your efforts.

Remember you are making a choice with keto. You can still go out to eat. You can even eat at a fast food restaurant like Wendy’s. You just select the foods from the menu that fit your diet.
