Have you recently started following the keto diet?
The keto diet can help you lose weight, gain more energy, and improve your overall body composition. However, one of the biggest reasons people avoid the keto diet is because they believe it to be too limiting when it comes to food options.
But this couldn’t be further from the truth. While the keto diet encourages you to limit your carb intake, the diet still allows for plenty of delicious food options.
One significant benefit of the diet is that it doesn’t require you to cut out cheese. However, you still need to be careful about the types of cheese you consume, as some cheeses are more carb-heavy than others.
Many keto followers even make their own cheese, as homemade cheese provides a delicious and healthy alternative to store-bought cheese.
Making keto cheese is a lot easier than you probably think (don’t worry, you don’t need to milk any cows!). Read on to discover some delicious and easy keto cheese sauce recipes.

Keto Cheese Sauce Recipe #1
The great thing about this keto cheese sauce recipe is that it takes just a few minutes to make.
To make this cheese sauce, you also need to select two types of cheese: soft cheese and hard cheese. For the soft cheese, we suggest either using full-fat cream cheese, fresh goat’s cheese, or fresh sheep’s cheese.
The cream cheese will give your cheese sauce a more neutral flavor, while the goat’s/sheep’s cheese will give it more of a kick. For hard cheese, you can use manchego, gruyere, parmesan, swiss, hard goat cheese, pecorino romano, Edam, or Emmantel.
If you want to use a strong-tasting cheese like gorgonzola, camembert, Roquefort, or brie, we suggest combining it with a neutral-tasting cheese such as cream cheese. You can also add some optional spices and herbs to your cheese sauce to give it more of a unique flavor.
Here’s what we recommend:
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 – 1 tsp mustard powder
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 2-4 tbsp freshly chopped herbs of choice (parsley, basil, thyme, mint, rosemary, or chives)
Here are the base ingredients you need to make the cheese sauce:
- 1/4 cup soft cheese
- 1/2 cup grated hard cheese
- 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 tbsp water or more cream to thin it out
- Pinch of salt
Then, here’s what you need to do to make the keto cheese sauce:
- Gently heat up the butter and cream in a small saucepan.
- Add the grated hard cheese and soft cheese.
- Stir until the cheese melts and bring the sauce to a simmer. Once the cheese starts to bubble, take the pan off the heat.
- Mix with a spatula until the cheese is creamy and smooth. If you want a thicker sauce, cook for an additional 3 to 5 minutes as you stir. If it’s too thick, you can add in a splash of water.
It’s best to eat the sauce immediately after making it. We suggest drizzling it over some steamed vegetables, meat, or fish. If you can’t serve the sauce right away, you can refrigerate it and then reheat it over low heat in a saucepan. Low heat will prevent the butter and cheese from separating.
One-fourth a cup of this cheese sauce contains around 200 calories, 5 grams of protein, 21 grams of fat, and just 1.3 net carbs.
Keto Cheese Sauce Recipe #2
If you loved the above keto cheese sauce and you’re looking to try another one. Here are the ingredients for another simple recipe:
- 2 ounces cream cheese
- 3 ounces grated Gruyere
- 6 ounces grated cheddar
- 1 ¼ cup heavy whipping cream
- 2 tablespoons butter
- ½ tsp pepper
- ½ tsp ground mustard
To make this keto-friendly cheese sauce, follow these instructions:
- Add cream cheese, heavy cream, and butter to a medium saucepan and cook over medium heat. Allow the cream cheese and the butter to melt.
- Whisk in the pepper and ground mustard.
- Remove the sauce from the heat and whisk in the Gruyere and cheddar until the sauce is smooth.
- Serve the sauce immediately.
As the sauce cools, it’ll begin to thicken. If you’d like to eat the sauce at a later time, reheat it in the microwave in 30-second intervals. If necessary, add a splash of cream to thin out the sauce.
Two tablespoons of this sauce have 120 calories, 4 grams of protein, 12 grams of fat, and just 1 net carb.

Tips for Eating Cheese on a Keto Diet
In addition to the above cheese sauces, other types of cheese are very keto-friendly. Some of the most keto-friendly cheeses include:
- Cream cheese
- Parmesan cheese
- Goat cheese
- Bleu cheese
If you’re looking for a crunchy, cheesy snack, you can also eat dehydrated cheese crisps. While you should check the nutrition label before buying, most dehydrated cheese crisps contain around 1-gram of net carbs per 150-calorie serving.
Some cheeses that you want to avoid on the keto diet include:
- Spray or canned cheese
- American cheese
- Ricotta cheese
- Cottage cheese
Not only are these cheeses higher in carbs, but they’re also more processed, so they have a higher sugar content and a higher content of artificial preservatives.
